A friend of mine, who was a relationship coach, once wrote a blog post titled What Kind Of Attention Do You Want. Her basic lament was how anyone could go onto a site such as Facebook, see relatively young girls barely dressed, and wondered if the ladies who put those pictures of themselves on the site really wanted others to think of them in that way. These days the same can be said for Instagram; I’m beyond being shocked after all these years.
There’s been a lot of stories over the course of time where both men and women are losing jobs or opportunities because more companies are hiring someone whose responsibility is to go online and look for information on these applicants. They’re going to social media sites, not liking what they see, and turning down those applicants. Sometimes they tell them what they found, knowing they can’t get into trouble for either not hiring someone or letting them go because the company doesn’t want to be associated with what’s being represented. I’ll own up to this one fact; I’m a different kind of person when it comes to comments I’ll accept on my blogs. Like almost everyone else, I love getting comments on the articles I write. I also hate spam, which is easy to pick out. Where I might differ is that I’ll also get rid of comments that don’t add anything to the conversation, even if I decide it’s not spam.
Let’s get this out of the way; if social media is suppressing freedom of speech, it’s because they’re allowed to do it. As much as the orange man rages that his words are being blocked, the truth is that we’re all given free access to these social media sites. Almost no one is paying anything to use them, so if it’s actually happening, it’s their right. You don’t like it… leave!
I once read a blog post that was supposed to be about leadership. It irked me so much that I had to write a blog post about it on my business blog refuting it. The topic was about whether it was better to be the best or even try to be the best, versus being unique when it came to getting business and leading others.
The way I’m wired, I believe it’s imperative that people always try to be the best they can be, and to be the best overall if possible. Being unique… heck, everyone’s unique when you think about it.
There are times where being unique can help, such as when you’re trying to catch someone’s eye if everyone happens to be very good. Unique can help one get sales whether they’re good or not, but being good, or trying to be the best, keeps people coming back for more. Continue reading Are Unique And Being The Best Antithetical?→

I get messages like this all the time. The wording might be slightly different but it’s pretty much always the same. A variation on this is when someone says they’ve seen my profile and wants to consult with me about something and also want to speak to me on the phone.
