The Facebook Ads Experiment

There’s a young guy I sometimes mentor and have lunch with named Adam. One of the things he does for business is he tries to help people market their businesses or products on Facebook.

We were having a conversation about this and he asked me if I wanted to try to market my business on Facebook using Facebook ads. I told him that I didn’t believe either of the main industries I was in would work all that well on Facebook. Still, I decided to give him a chance.

5 Things To Consider When A Break Isn’t A Break

When last I wrote, I was talking about taking a peace of mind break by staying away from social media for a week. I thought that with everything going on in my life, I could use the down time to maybe get some reading done, watch some TV or movies, or maybe do some writing. It turns out that things don’t always work out the way you hope they will, especially when you really don’t have a plan.

For instance, it’s easy to say you’re going to sit down and watch TV and movies. It’s harder to pull off when it’s something you’re not used to doing. I did watch two movies, but I deleted a bunch more that I had recorded on DVR, realizing I really wasn’t interested in watching them. What I was left with were a few movies and some documentaries that were all over 2 hours long. Of the two movies I watched, one of them took me six or seven hours because I couldn’t sit still to watch the entire movie.

Let’s Talk About That 80/20 Social Sharing Rule

By now most people have heard of the Pareto Principle. In essence, it’s the belief that 80% of consequences comes from 20% of causes. The origin came from Pareto’s recognition that 80% of Italy’s wealth belonged to 20% of the population. He came up with this in 1896, and for over 120 years people have equated it with everything from investing to business and customers to fitness and health.

Over the last few years I’ve seen it being recommended by a lot of bloggers and marketers when it comes to the concept of social sharing. The premise is that if one is trying to market themselves via social media, they’ll get the most benefit by sharing other people’s content 80% and their own around 20%.

How Does Your Personal Community Flow?

This is a break from my norm and a fairly short article, but there’s a purpose to it. Stick with me for a couple of minutes; I’m a bit curious to see what you’re thinking.

I have different levels of friends and associates in my life. In a way, it’s like a funnel, where the smallest part is populated with maybe 4 or 5 people, it goes up slightly from there to the next level, and at a certain point it widens greatly because there are many people I’m friendly with that aren’t exactly my friends; at least I don’t see them that way.

The “Reply All” Catastrophe Of Twitter

If you’re a Twitter user and not a part of what’s known as “Follow Friday” or “#FF“, I’ll bet you’re tired of seeing those types of messages. You’re lucky if you see either of those two phrases above because those are easily blocked; I’ll come back to that in a minute or two.

If you reply “all” she’s eating this!

If you don’t see either of those particular missives but you’re still included in a group notification with lots of other Twitter folks you probably don’t know, you’ve found yourself in the Twitter version of “reply all” that almost everyone cringes at as a consequence of a group email.
