1,701 Blog Articles… Oops!

I’m probably having two blog posts this week. The next one will be my synopsis of the Blogging While Brown conference I went to over the weekend. This one is about hitting 1,700 posts… a post late. That’s okay though; at least I realized it and now have something new to talk about.

As I did with Post #1,600, I get to mention highlights of the past year as it pertained to my life, positive or negative, and then I get to highlight some of my favorite posts of the year. While that’s always fun, I’m going to begin this one by talking a bit about my present blogging mood.

Why I Need To Go To A Blogging While Brown Conference

I’d like to share a couple of mentions I got this week, both on the same day. The first was from a post by my buddy Steve Borek, who credits me for convincing him to start blogging, titled The First Step Is The Hardest To Take. The second is from Ileane Smith‘s site Basic Blog Tips, where Lisa Sicard wrote a compilation piece based on advice as to why Twitter is great for marketing titled Twitter For Blogging – 15 Reasons It’s Proven Powerful. Go check them both out, as both articles are excellent.

This coming weekend I’ll be going to my first ever non-medical billing conference. It’s called the Blogging While Brown, and it’s a conference for people of color who blog, this year being held in Washington D.C. I’m hoping it’s a lot of fun and educational at the same time, and my buddy Yasmin Shiraz is the only person I definitely know who’s going to be there.

How Social Do We Have To Be On Social Media?

Today is Independence Day In America… sort of… At least it’s the 4th of July, which denotes the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 with the big John Hancock signature on it. To all those who will be celebrating the holiday… nicely or not… I wish you a very safe and happy day.

Independence is an interesting thing to talk about today. Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of articles talking about a sort of independence as it pertains to social media. That topic is the “art” of unfriending, separating from someone on a social media platform who’s getting on your nerves in some fashion.

Are Fewer People Creating New Content?

Before I get into today’s topic, I’d like to break a blogging taboo (I’m always doing that) to highlight the fact that last Friday was the 15th anniversary of my being self employed. If you know me (which you would if you’re a regular visitor), you know that I wrote about it. I titled it 15 Years Of Self Employment; 3 Things You Need To Know, and not only did I give some information on that but I also created a video that went live on the same day that’s embedded on the same post. Want to know how I decided to go into business for myself and why I do all the things I do? Check it out, comment, share and give me a bit of love on it. I don’t ask often but hey, how many people make it 15 years working on their own? πŸ™‚

You know what? In actually, writing that post seems to make me kind of an anomaly, just like my writing this post today. Why?

Awakening The Sleeping Giant

“I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.” Isoroku Yamamoto… maybe…

The quote above is one that many people have seen or heard over the years. It’s attributed to the Japanese admiral whose name I’ve shown above. It’s also probably apocryphal; no one can prove that he said it, and he was someone who was widely quoted in his day.

It’s a great quote, but it’s unverifiable. The thing is, just because it might not be a true quote doesn’t mean it wasn’t an accurate quote. After all, he did say this at least a year before Pearl Harbor:
