I’m not going to say this is a new trend, but it’s something that’s happening with blogs that’s really irking me right now and it’s about time I talked about it. We’re about to talk about blog comments… kind of…
approve my comments!
I started commenting on more blogs recently, trying to show my support for bloggers because that’s the way things used to be. We would visit each other’s blogs and comment, and other people would see our comments and then they would visit our blogs and they’d comment… on and on. It’s been a long while since I wrote a post where I touch upon a lot of different things. I’m doing this for two reasons. One, because each of the things I’m going to talk about are relatively short, which means writing about just one of them wouldn’t be much of a blog post. The other is because this is my last post of 2019, as I’m giving myself a 2-week break.
MLK Plaque
I’ll tell those of you who read this now that after the new year this paragraph will change to remove the part about it being the last post of 2019. Within a couple of years, few of these things will be considered as evergreen content, but one never knows who’s late to the game when they start researching some of the things I’m going to talk about.
Let’s get this out of the way; I’m not against using SEO to help you get where you want to be when it comes to your blog or your website. As a matter of fact, it’s still important to highlight your main topics or business just to have a chance to compete with others who are in your field of expertise. I’d even go so far as to say that exhibiting good SEO principles will put you ahead of everyone else who isn’t even trying to use it; absolutely 100%!
will this face drive traffic?
With that said… I almost hate to add this piece, but… the best SEO techniques aren’t close to being enough to get you the traffic or publicity you’re hoping for to reach your online goals. Nope, nada, never. I don’t care what Neil Patel, Brandon Gaille or anyone else has to say on this front; it’s not going to get you there, no matter what you’re trying to do. It’s amazing how much there is to maintaining one’s blog, especially after blogging on one site a lot of years. You can imagine how many times I come into this blog and my business blog and start tinkering with things. Some of them are minor; some are hard. Some are just time consuming.
I’ve written a few times on the premise of blog maintenance. I started in 2012 talking about broken links maintenance, which is relatively easy if you use a plugin to do the work for you. In 2016 I gave 6 blog maintenance tips to help people take care of a few more things, while mentioning broken links again (it had been 4 years after all). In January of this year I gave you 4 more blog maintenance ideas, while linking back to the other two articles. You’d think 10 maintenance ideas would be enough, wouldn’t you? You’d be surprised. A couple of years ago on a different blog I wrote an article talking about re-purposing blog posts. That post was more about internal linking by making sure to take old blog posts and add those links to newer posts to help enhance the SEO benefits of new content.
In this instance the concept of re-purposing content is more than talking about blogging. Most people have something that they’ve written previously somewhere on their computers. What they forget is that much of what was already written would make great blog posts or articles to put on their websites. If you’re looking for a lot of content and don’t have the time to write something new, going back through old files could provide you with what you need.
