Wordpress 2.8 Update

Posted by Mitch on Jun 15, 2009
Listen with webreader

Okay, by now, y’all know that things just don’t always go right with me. At the same time, you know I usually find an answer.

Saturday, I decided I was going to update my blogs to 2.8. I figured this would have to go well for at least one of them, since WP has changed over to automatic updating, eliminating the old update plugin that I happened to like a lot.

As it figures, none of my blogs would do that automatic update; ugh. That meant that I was going to have to download the program and do the update manually.

Now, I know Sire said with 2.7.1 that all he did was just load files over the original program and things worked like a charm for him. Well, you’re not really supposed to do that, especially when you’re upgrading to a whole new version, which this is. What you have to do if updating manually is delete certain files. You delete the entire folder that says WP-Admin, and the one that says WP-Includes, and some other junk. But, with a FTP program, it won’t let you delete a folder without deleting stuff within each folder, which sometimes means you have to go layer by layer by layer to get everything out, and delete each folder once it’s empty before moving to the next one.

That’s the process I hate more than any other because it just seems to take so long. It’s not hard to do, but I hate it. Luckily, you don’t have to touch the WP-Content folder usually, although this time there was a folder that you had to replace; seems that with this version they’ve changed the default WP theme. Finally!

Anyway, I decided to start with my finance blog, Top Finance Blog, since it’s the newest, and therefore has the least amount of content. I deleted all the files I was supposed to, then uploaded everything I was supposed to. Oh yeah, before doing any of that I disabled all the plugins on that blog, and backed up the files.

Then I went to the blog, where it told me it had to update the database. Did that, got in, and things looked a little different, but no big deal. The big deal came when I went to the plugins page and tried to activate them. Suddenly I was getting that Internal Error 500, which doesn’t mean almost anything to me. I wasn’t a happy guy. I was initially able to go backwards, which took me back to the plugins page, but no further. Luckily, the reading part of the blog that everyone sees was still working properly, so if I’d had any visitors they’d have been fine, but I couldn’t get into admin.

I tried various tricks for about 5 minutes, then went to the Wordpress main page. It gave me nothing; it had some ideas about troubleshooting, but it didn’t mention that. I didn’t panic, but I was irked. I then knew it was time to go onto the search engines and find my answer.

I found it pretty quickly, but didn’t believe it. On a site called Code Different, there was an interesting fix on a long topic title, Solution for 500 Internal Server Error after upgrading to Wordpress 2.7 at 1and1-server. What it said is that error means you’re PHP has run out of memory. I’d never heard of any such thing, but there it was. The fix? Open Notepad, type in “memory=20MB“, and save the file as “php.ini“. Then upload it to your WP-Admin directory and you’re all set.

Frankly, my mind was skeptical. All this technology and the solution was that simple? Still, it was simple after all, so I did it, uploaded, and viola, there I was. I was stunned! I wrote a comment on his blog thanking him for the simple fix. Today, I’m still stunned, but it worked, and now I’ll be taking some time to upgrade my other blogs. By the time you read this I’ll probably have already done them all.

So, there you go. Safety first, then if you have my problem a simple resolution. Life doesn’t get much better than that.

Good morning, Mitch.

I’m happy to hear that you resolved your problem fairly quickly after updating, but I’m bothered by the fact that you could not do the automatic update.

I used to live on the bleeding edge of technology, but now I find it much more comfortable to remain a version or two behind, until I see how things are working out for the early adopters and those who are more fearless than me.

I think I’m going to hold off awhile and see how it goes with others.

Thanks for the report on your experience with it.

Act on your dream!

Hi John. These days, the reason I try to update sooner than later is because there are people now who go around looking for WP blogs to take over. They exploit older versions all the time; at least two of our online friends have had their blogs hacked into because they didn’t update.

I wait a few days, but never much longer than that, hoping to hear of anything really bad very early on. I heard nothing bad early on this time, so I upgraded. But the automatic update didn’t work for me for 2.7 or 2.7.1 either; as I said, the software gods must have it in for me. :-)

This is great info to have Mitch thanks…We always run into troubles especially after we update to the newest versions of WordPress — talk about error messages!

Have you ever had the problem of when your writing your posts, the format gets stuck in html? That has been happening to me a lot lately and I don’t know why.

Anyway, thanks for sharing this,
Tim

Tim, I’ve never had that issue. I have seen, though, where sometimes I’ll go look at posts and notice something’s wonky with it. That usually means I didn’t close a tag in some previous message.

I typically wait for new releases on Wordpress updates until they straighten out all the bugs, but I’m glad they finally decided to add automatic updates. That’s been a major hassle to upgrade every few months.

If the automatic update was working for me, I’d be a happier guy. I just don’t get it; things always worked when I had that plugin that used to do automatic updating for me.

Good Night you went through all that to update to 2.8. I keep hearing that people are having problems. I want to make sure my plugins are updated before I update. That’s usually the problem I have the plugin author’s always have to go into reactive mode to fix compatibility issues. You would think there would be some kind of mass mailing list for plugin authors to beta test the new WP release. I will check details of plugins before upgrading also to check if anyone else is having issues.

It’s a smart thing to do, Monique, but also remember to deactivate all plugins before updating to WP 2.8. Hey, if there were never any issues, life might start to get boring.

Hey Mitch,
I am glad I am not the only one who has had problems with the new automatic update.

I had deleted the automatic update plugin and had to reinstall it to upgrade.

I have upgraded one site so far. No problems.

The thing is, the automatic upgrade plugin isn’t supposed to work with WP anymore. However, I’m thinking about adding it back to see how it’ll work on this blog and my business blog before I go the long route on it all.

So, did it have something to do with your host? It’s strange that some people are having this problem and others are not. Anyway, I’m glad you’ve sorted it all out.

I’ve still got the auto-upgrade plugin, and even though I didn’t use it I think I will next time as it will remind me to backup, something I didn’t bother with this time around

I don’t know what the problem is, Sire, but the upgrade wasn’t perfect with my finance blog, and now I’m hesitant to touch these other two blogs.

It won’t hurt to wait Mitch, but then again there is no guarantee that the .1 version will be any better. Reckon all you can do is keep your fingers crossed when you try the next upgrade.

Well, at some point I may give it a go, but as I said, my finance blog didn’t respond great to the upgrade, and I’d really hate to mess up my other two blogs. But we’ll see.

Well I had the upgrade problem and I use bluehost. I see that Mitch has ads for bluehost so my guess is he uses it too.
