Truthfully, I don't think it's designed badly, just minimally. I did use one of those book programs, and that's what it came out as. I thought about not using a book at all, only with text (I'm not sure if you've gone to the main sales page or not), because I've purchased many of these things without a book, and I still may end up going that route later on. Also, a well designed cover can catch the eye, and make the reader want to know more about it. Essentially I believe in order to secure a solid sale, people should not be negative towards any aspect of your pitch - be it layout, design or content. I'm not much of a designer, and I also wouldn't know whether I'd like what someone else did or not. As you've seen in viewing my "real" book, I didn't have much of a design on that one either. Still, my thoughts overall are that people can't really be swayed that much by a book cover on what they know is an ebook, can they? It's never been what's gotten my attention, to tell you the truth. I think though you might get some more sales with a more 'designer' cover. I believe it would help draw people into being interested about the book, and then make them read more about it.
