Upgrade To WordPress 2.7.1; How?

Posted by Mitch on Feb 17, 2009
Listen with webreader

For at least a week I’ve been seeing this notification at the top of my blog, in the administration area, telling me to update to WordPress 2.7.1. Well, obviously it’s still there, and I still haven’t upgraded, but it’s not for a lack of trying.

On all three of my blogs, which are all WordPress blogs, I have clicked on the button that asked me if I wanted to upgrade automatically; nothing happened. I thought about downloading the update and loading it myself, but I decided against it because, after all, isn’t that why I added the Automatic Upgrade Plugin to begin with?

So, after numerous tries on each blog, I decided it was time to go online to see if anyone else had a fix for it. Of course, I wasn’t close to being alone with this issue. And there are fixes galore, but they involve, well, some interesting differences. The first is that you have to totally kill the Automatic Upgrade Plugin, which supposedly counters the upgrade program that was inserted into WordPress 2.7 to begin with; I didn’t know that. You don’t just inactivate the plugin; you have to totally delete it from your blog. Well, I figured that was easy to try, so I did, then tried to update my blog; nope, wasn’t happening.

Then I read something else that said to inactive all plugins and that would work. I did that, and I got to the next stage, which came with a message that said “unpacking the core update”; that’s as far as that went.

Someone else said you had to not only inactivate all of your plugins, but delete them as well. At that point I said “no”, it’s not happening. I have a bunch of plugins, and I have all the settings just the way I want them, and I’m not about to go through all that trouble for an update. Someone tell me why WordPress had to mess with the automatic upgrade process, please.

So, why not just download the update and load it manually? I did some reading on that, and it seems that many people either lost their blogs entirely or lost some feature of their blogs. I decided I wasn’t going through all of that noise, even though I may be a bit more technically minded than many people. Though the original process used to only take about five minutes, it’s been awhile since I’ve even had to attempt it, and I’m just not in the mood to do so.

Why did WordPress make this one so difficult? They don’t think they did, but the numbers seem to disagree with them. For the number of fixes that are supposedly contained in the update, it seems to be causing just as many problems for some people who actually got it to upgrade by some fashion. Does that mean their upgrade was invalid, or just that the program was unstable with some downloads? Frankly, I don’t know and I don’t care. I want the protections, but I also want WordPress to officially fix this thing, then tell everyone what’s wrong, instead of us having to run around researching it on various forums and getting conflicting advice. Of course, I say all this with the understanding that the software is free, and that, truthfully, they don’t have to do a single thing to help us out. And this proves why sometimes, with free, you get what you deserve.

Still, I’m holding out hope, so if anyone else had problems loading this thing, and did something that I didn’t mention above to get it working, and it’s working fine, please share.

Good evening, Mitch.

I feel about the same way you do about this.

I never upgrade until I’ve done a search to see what others are experiencing, and I’m seeing enough bad experiences that I’m just going to wait awhile and see how it all gets sorted out.

Act on your dream!

Mitch Reply:

Glad we’re on the same page, John. I have to admit that I’m usually one of the first folks to do an upgrade, so I’m really glad that, this time around, it didn’t work.

February 17th, 2009 | 6:20 PM

hi Mitch,
Aren’t you already at 2.7? Why do you feel the need to go to 2.7.1? Are there any reasons?
I started at 2.6.something, and am just going to leave it until I need to upgrade to be able to do something I can’t do now, or if there’s a security reason. I just don’t see a reason to switch to 2.7. But then again, I was still using IE6 until a few months ago, I am ashamed to admit. :( ~ Steve, the Firefox trade show guru

The reason WP adds updates is for more protections against problems such as hackers and the like. In this case, they mentioned 68 fixes that came from complaints by users, which is a bunch at one time.

I’ve upgraded all of my blogs manually as I was tired of the damn stupid %#*@in reminder. Oh, I feel so much better now for getting that out of the system. Anyway it went fine on the first blog and so I did it to all my blogs and guess what? I am still blogging.

There may be a chance that it still won’t work. That would be a bummer as I hate manual updates.

Well, my friend, you have answered your own question: wait till the world and its auntie has worked out all the bugs and THEN upgrade to 2.8!

Haven’t you learned ANYTHING from Bill Gates and Windows?

Just ignore the error meassges and wait till others fix it!

Althea Garner Reply:

Yeah, but it’s qute a visual, isn’t it? LOL!

I have the same issues with several of my providers – my web site for example. I am being wooed by another provider for my main business website (yup, a template because I just don’t have the time, OK?), but when do I have the time to familiarize myself with the new package, despite what they TELL me it contains (bin there, done that – got the coffee mug!)even though the new site would cost me less?

[sigh]….. Each person, organization, client, thinks that they are the only ones in my life and I therefore have 23 hours left to my day, to enjoy!

WordPress? I don’t care how many times I get that message – I AIN’T changing!

And BTW….. if there’s no Starbucks in heaven, I ain’t going! (Just threw that one in for the h*ll of it! LOL!)

Althea Garner´s last blog post..The Start Of The Real Estate Year

Mitch Reply:

You’re one person who I know has been through lots of websites and web hosts and webmasters and web,… well, we all get the picture. So you went with a template, which I saw and thought maybe that was an industry standard. Still, it gets the job done, I figure. How’s the housing market going anyway out there in Cali? Certainly sounds like bad news from what we hear out east.

February 17th, 2009 | 11:43 PM

The reason that I go through so many web hosts/providers is that I don’t get what they promise! Problem is that the person selling the service is NOT the person who built the program and basically, sales people promise anything you want – then can’t deliver (as has been the case with my previous hosts).

Yes, using a template site for Real Estate IS industry standard, because it comes with IDX (an automatic link to our MLS Board – not easy to do, because of the regulations, if you are not in the industry).

Without IDX, we are pretty much sunk, because clients want the benefit of being able to search anonymously, without being hounded by a REALTOR(R). Without IDX, there’s no reason to use the site!

One of my BIG bug-bears is – and has been for years: “Is your site built with frames or tables”, because there is a very real difference in whether SEO is effective or not. In every instance I am told that the site is built in tables – but once I get (and pay for a year of) my site, I find that it is built in frames, which makes SEO almost impossible!

The other problem I have is that when signing up for these services, REALTORS(R) are perceived as being ‘high income earners’ and therefore they are perceived to be able to afford the $600 – $700 setup fee!

Bee -Ess!

In many cases, it is the consumer who sits there and plugs in all the information, before sending it to the company for setting up of a ‘record’ in the database.

I have learned to challenge these companies and in most cases, I now get my setup fee reduced or even waived altogether, which proves how these companies are preying on the RE industry!

We get charged monthly fees, setup fees and ‘per use’ fees and to be honest, it has got completely out of hand!

As far as the property market is concerned, Southern California has kicked off the year with a ‘Whizz-Bang”! Since January 1, I have been inundated with new clients on my web site (about 3 – 4 new clients, each week) and all of a sudden, the buyers who were sitting on the fence, are now anxious to buy!

Having converted my office to paperless a year ago, I have niched myself as the ‘Online REALTOR(R)’ and gone paperless, there, too! ….. I have certified in digital signing, so some of my clients are from France, Australia, Korea, Cambodia and Philippines.

Being able to sign digitally – and remain legal – gives me the edge, since so many of my colleagues are still hand writing documents.

Life is Gooooood, Mitch – I can’t complain! Um…. I just have to put in for a 48 hour work day!

People charge what the market will bear, and that seems to be standard in your industry. Course, you just did what very few people remember to try to do with their credit cards, that being call someone to see if they can get a better rate. Maybe that’s a service you could charge people to teach, eh?

And I’m glad you’re making money on real estate; keep going! And, BTW, check your email.

Mitch, you know that I had problems upgrading from 2.6.5 to 2.7 and went through hell and high water to retrieve my blog. Having done that and aborted the idea of upgrading to 2.7, I went back to my faithful 2.6.5 and was quite happy with that till the advise about 2.7.1 came along. In the meanwhile I was being bombarded by many people to upgrade and finally, just two days ago, I did, from 2.6.5 to 2.7.1 To start with, I noticed that the tool bar on top of the box for posting blogs has disappeared and I had to get that sorted out by reinstalling the whole thing. Everything seemed to be working fine except that I was informed that I had two blog rolls on my blog. Just half an hour ago, I had to go through the prolonged process of finding out how that happened and removing the surplus one. Other than that, everything seems to be working alright.
May be something else may pop up. I do not know. I shall cross the bridge when I come to it. In the process, I am getting to know some technical matters, and that is not too bad is it?

Long time no hear from, Rummuser! I’m glad you were able to get 2.7.1 working, and since you were still on 2.6.5, I know you had to get used to a lot of changes that came with 2.7; so did I at the time. I’m just going to wait for the next upgrade, though, from time to time, I’ll check to see if it’s decided to work for me.

Upgrades..the bane of users and IT management alike. I know of one WordPress blog that was putting out trojans (mischievous programs not the other things) to people leaving comments. So there is a danger (Star Wars quote) to not upgrading for the new protections. Just my 2 cents.

I use WordPress.com and they did the upgrade over the weekend.

Hi Mitch

Ive updated 2 wordpress blogs one by manually updating the version which I forgot to turn off all plugins before going ahead and wiped the blog, so it was just a white page. After a few hours of playing around I managed to get it back by uploading all the files for an older wordpress version. The second WordPress blog I used the Automatic Upgrade plugin version 1.2.2. Just turned off all the plugins except the upgrade plugin and it installed smoothly. The big issue with 2.7 is that you have to disable all the plugins or it causes major problems as I found out. The admin panel alone on the new version is worth the upgrade its a big improvement.

Mitch Reply:

Hi Khaled. I tried your suggestion, but with the one plugin nothing happens at all. By removing it the program at least gets to “unpacking the core” whatever. I really am trying these suggestions.

February 19th, 2009 | 8:30 AM
Mitch:

Just thought I’d mention that I did decide to manually upgrade my TFB blog. Took awhile, with all the time it takes to delete files through FTP, but I got it done and all worked well. But what a process! That, and, if you’re already on 2.7, you won’t notice any differences whatsoever in your Admin panel.

Sire Reply:

I actually took the slack way around, and I know you are not supposed to do it, by overwriting the files rather than deleting them. Luckily for me all went well.

Sire´s last blog post..Translation Of A Big Night Out

Mitch Reply:

I’m thinking about doing it that way, Sire, because it took about 20 minutes to delete all those files and only 2 minutes or so to upload the new files.

February 19th, 2009 | 10:03 AM

Hi Mitch,
I’m experiencing the same problem and my automatic upgrade plugin does not work too. When I have new plugins to install I do this manually. For WP2.7 I’ve read some bloggers had big problems after installing it so I’d rather not do it.I’m quite happy with my WP2.6. The only feature I’d miss is the threaded comment that I would love to have.

Actually Peter, 2.7 was a great upgrade, and I used the automatic plugin which worked wonders. For this one, at least I did get it working on my finance blog by deleting and adding the correct files, but as Sire just said, he just downloaded, then copied what was needed over to the new one; I’m sure he didn’t copy over the wp-content file, which is the main file everyone is supposed to leave alone. But I know Sire knew better than that. lol

Sire Reply:

OOPS! I actually did Mitch.

Mitch Reply:

Really Sire? I’m surprised you didn’t wipe out all of your plugins by doing that; lucky!

Can’t see how it would as it only replaces old files and introduces new ones. Other files should be affected, at least that is my theory.

Sire´s last blog post..Translation Of A Big Night Out

Mitch Reply:

Not a bad theory, but that’s not what the installation instructions stated.

Sire Reply:

That’s true, but what can I say, 5 blogs later and everything worked fine. Maybe I should buy a lottery ticket.

February 20th, 2009 | 2:43 AM

as long as you back up the database and download the site to your pc before you try, if you wipe the blog out its no problem, because you can just upload it again. If you don’t keep a backup that’s when the problems come. To keep the old version on a manual upgrade instead of deleting the folders I tried just renaming them and adding a 2 at the end, so if the upgrade folders dont work, you can just delete them and remove the 2 from the older folder names and your site is back up working again.

Mitch Reply:

I did back mine up, khaled, just to protect myself of course. I used the WP backup plugin, which I suggest most people get because it’s just important enough for all of us who have WP blogs to protect ourselves.
