Sunday Question – What Do You Crave?

I’m on an eating plan for at least this week, though it might turn into three weeks. I’m going through what’s called a Metabolic Eating Plan, which is supposed to help me learn which types of foods make me feel better at some point, as well as helps me be more healthy, lose weight, and have more energy.

I’m not quite struggling so far, but it hasn’t been easy for the first few days. I probably should have started this thing on a Monday after a weekend of eating bad so that I could tell myself that I was giving my body a break, but I started this thing after already having started something else, not knowing this was going to be a part of the overall plan. I started the day after going out to dinner with my friend Scott and his wife for a birthday dinner, and of course I didn’t eat great that night, but I was actually better than I could have been.

This means there are things I’ve been without for longer than a week, and I’m really craving some of that stuff that I’m not really supposed to be having. When I crave things, most of the time they’re centered around chocolate or peanut butter. Doesn’t matter whether it’s ice cream, cake, candy, cookies or pudding, that’s my craving of choice.

Every once in awhile there are foods I crave, but it’s rare for that type of craving to last more than a few days. In general, I crave something sweet, and I’m really missing it right now, but I’ll persevere.

When you have cravings, what types of things do you go for, or what do you want that you decide to stay away from? Another light Sunday topic. 🙂

  • I always have a craving for cookies! I am known as the Cookie Monster, Lol! I think it’s more of an addiction. I really love cookies. I have cravings for cheese from time to time. So instead of eating slices of cheese, which I prefere, I eat cottage cheese and it satisfies my craving. Nothing can satisfy my cookie cravings.

    • Angelique, I love cookies myself, as I think I’ve shown here. They’re easy to eat and take with you.

  • With me, it’s usually a craving for something salty or something fatty which are the two things that I should really cut out of my diet as I have (or had) high blood pressure. I did cut them out nearly completely but then of course, slid back again.

Lately I’ve had cravings for salted crisps (what you call chips). Not good.

    • I’m lucky that way, Val. I usually eat low salt or no salt chips, and I actually like the taste. Late at night I start craving something crunchy as well.

  • Every now and then I get a craving for bison. I know it sounds strange, but when it happens it stays on my mind and there’s no substitute- a beef steak, hamburger, pork, nothing will satisfy that craving until I grill up a big bison burger.
    Now my mouth’s watering.

    • I can honestly say bison would never have crept into my mind, Aaron. lol However, I do know what you mean; sometimes you just need a certain food over something else and that’s that.

  • Way to go Mitch. A really healthy you sometime soon eh??!! i am one of those people who mainly eats healthy but occasionally I crave chocolate which is kinda strange as mostly I don’t even eat it! I then treat myself but as I say; I mostly eat healthy so I figure it’s okay. All the best with your attempt and I hope you do well.

    • Thanks Patricia. Today I didn’t struggle with it as much as I have other days, and that’s a good thing.

  • There is only one thing I crave for Mitch. Very simple yet so very hard to satisfy. Just to be left alone without having to care for others in my life.

    • That’s a craving that can only be satisfied with time, Rummuser. And often, when it comes, the person wishing for it laments the loss.

  • Althea Garner says:

I am extremely proud of you, Mitch! I just imagine my dead body on the plate, instead of the forbidden food, cos that’s what’s going to become of me if I give in!
    🙂

    • Nope Althea, I’m not even going to start imagining anything like that. You know the tenets of the Secret, what you believe is what you manifest! lol

  • It may sound strange to you, but this week, I will try to gain some weight. Correct, gain weight and eat tasty and fat foods. During the last 2 months, my health conditions were not perfect and I lost more than 10kg. I want to look better again.

    • That’s a sizable drop for sure (22 pounds for us goofy Americans lol). If I’d lost that weight I’d say “thanks” and be trying to lose more.

  • I sometimes wonder if some cravings come from the fact that your body has a deficiency that it needs to take care of. Like every once in a while, I’ll crave bananas. Does my body know when its potassium is low? But as I said, even if it’s true, this idea explains only some cravings. What could possibly be in cheesecake that I need to survive?

    • Happiness! At least that’s always my thought whenever I want chocolate, the immediate happiness I get when I get it into my mouth.

  • Oh, this is not a good topic for you, Mitch. LOL

I crave a good raspberry pie at times. Warmed up with melting vanilla ice cream on top. Ummmmm…ummmmm!

This time of year, I do look forward to my Mom’s apple pudding, too.

  • Hi Mitch,
Many congrats to you, cravings can be hard to beat.

When it comes to foods, I don’t crave too many things. Occasionally I might want Chinese food like “eggrolls” or wontons, but I make those myself. When I became veggie in 1992, I craved steamed crabs for a while after making the switch. Interestingly enough that was the last non-veggie food I ate before making the switch.

Now if you asked me do I ever have digital cravings, I’d have a long list. I love gaming, but haven’t played any games in about four months. My life is busy, between work, spending time with family, I simply don’t have the time.

    • Digital cravings; I hadn’t even thought about that, instead usually thinking of it as withdrawals. lol I love Chinese food, but can’t necessarily say I “crave” it, at least not when compared to desserts and the like.

  • I too am a choco-holic.

I also at times have to have my “famous rice”- fried garlic slivers along with either a tad bit of left over meat or throw in a minute steak or two, broken up.

Throw in some cooked rice, adding a dash (or two, or three) of red hot pepper, some thyme and a little salt. Mix together in frying pan. Eat while steaming hot.

    So comforting!

    Clears the sinuses, too!
