Music Sites You May Not Know About

Posted by Mitch Mitchell on Nov 13, 2008

There are some pretty good sites online where you can find music to listen to that you not only will love, but that you don’t have to pay for. Sure, by not paying for it, you don’t get to control what you’re listening to, but isn’t that half the fun of radio to begin with? Truthfully, some sites died out with the inception of copyright laws that started charging royalties to online radio stations, but some have survived, and here’s some of the best.

My favorite site, believe it or not, is Beethoven.com, a site I discovered accidentally four years ago while out of town. I love classical music, being a music and history major, and of course Beethoven is one of my favorite composers. But this site isn’t only about Beethoven, though they highlight some of his major pieces on a regular basis, which is always great, but it’s classical music of all types. Its model has changed somewhat, since it’s based in Connecticut, so how they have advertising within the local market. And they do have an area where you can become a member, although, truthfully, I couldn’t begin to tell you why you’d register other than you then get a digital music feed rather than its regular feed, which, I have to say, sounds pretty good to me.

The next site I want to highlight plays smooth jazz, which is my wife’s favorite genre of music, and it’s got the odd nome de plume of Surf Music. It’s based out of Germany, which may explain the difference in translation, but the music is supreme, and once again, it’s free.

Of course, if you want to go to one source for multiple music choices, there are two that will whet your fancy, though the business models are slightly different. The website most people will know about is Live 365, which has as its business model the opportunity to purchase any of the songs you’re listening to from its many genres. In my opinion, the sound could be better, but having multiple choices could be worse. The other site is less well known, but it deserves some respect, that being 1 FM, which gives you the opportunity to select different bandwidth speeds based on which player you wish to use, and one of those choices is through your own Windows Media Player, which suits me just fine. I selected the highest bandwidth, since I’m on Turbo Road Runner (super high speed), and listened to disco, one of my favorite genres of music, and it was absolutely wonderful. There aren’t as many musical choices, and you do have advertisements showing in your player while listening to the music, and of course you also still have the option of purchasing the songs, but you see a playlist of songs coming up, and I like that because it gives you the option of deciding if you want to stay and listen to all those songs or go elsewhere for something more up your alley.

So, free music online is still alive, and it’s thriving. I hope you enjoy these sites.

Well Mitch…quite interesting and I will be checking out these sites…you know how I love music…and pretty much all kinds except a few. I even would listen to the classical for a short time.
Ironicaly, I have a site that is geared towards 80′ metal and I am on there severa times a day. That would explain my absence from Bloggerparty so much..haha. I just stepped in there yesterday for a short time and will be going back today.]
But ya, I am alwasy up for new music sites, so thanks for posting this.

Thanks Miss Amber. I think you’ll find quite a variety on some of these. But I’ve gotta ask you; 80′s metal? Ick! lol

This was what I got into in my most impressionable years–9th-12t grade…I think it is the best rock and roll out there to date…ya they call it metal. You know though, I am with ya on the old disco stuff too, that came before the rock and roll, just didn’t stick with me as much, but I still love it!!!

Obviously, me being me, 80′s metal didn’t resonate with me at all. Disco was my favorite, but I did gain some appreciation for rock music in the 70′s. Not all of it, though; no one can explain to me the appeal of that group with the flautist as the lead. Can’t think of the name right now.

Whoa listen here old man, don’t be aknockin the 80′s LOL

So you haven’t found any adware/spyware issues like almost all the other music sites?

Mitch Reply:

The music sites where you have those issues are mainly file sharing sites. The sites I’m highlighting are more like internet radio, so there’s nothing being downloaded whatsoever except maybe a cookie here and there. That’s why I’ve never signed up with any file sharing sites; like I don’t already have enough problems with my computer.

Ohhh gotcha, that makes a lot more sense….listen as you work.

Exactly. I’ve found that, while on consulting assignments, I can listen to Beethoven.com while on client computer systems because there’s nothing obtrusive on the site.
