Mozilla

Posted by Mitch Mitchell on Nov 8, 2008

Most people who use Firefox or Thunderbird know that they got those items from Mozilla. However, I’m betting most of you don’t know that there’s a Mozilla.com and a Mozilla.org, and that, though each of the sites has some kind of relationship with the other, they’re totally different sites.

Mozilla.com is where we all get Firefox and Thunderbird. They also have a store where you can purchase t-shirts and other clothing, and other items with the Mozilla “Firefox” logo on it.

Mozilla.org is where one can pick up news about what’s going on with Mozilla, including updates to Firefox and Mozilla, but it’s also where other software that Mozilla offers resides. For instance, there are two other browsers that they provide, one called Seamonkey and the other called Camino. Seamonkey is an all-in one application where one can do browsing, email, chatting and HTML coding; it reminds me of what the earliest versions of Netscape used to do. Camino is a browser meant for Mac users who want to experience what everyone else experiences with Firefox.

Two things I was interested in learning more about, one of which I have downloaded and now use, were Sunbird and Lightning. Sunbird is a calendar application that works like Outlook, only more colorful. Lightning is actually more of a add-on that you can load into Thunderbird and it adds the calendar application right into that program. That turned out to be the one I wanted, so I downloaded it and installed it into my Thunderbird program, and was happy to discover that it also has a tasks list with it.

There are more things you can see on the second site, such as other projects the Mozilla Corporation is working on, and if you’re interested you can take a look. Happy viewing.

OK who do I ask about the idiotic new address bar in FF3 that so many are raving about….still on 2 because of it.

Mitch Reply:

The address bar? What’s different about it (I’m not the most observant guy all the time)? Heck, just change the theme.

Dennis Edell Reply:

The pull down has a whole mess of unneeded crap and it doesn’t “save” URL’s like before.

Mitch Reply:

I’m not sure what you mean, Dennis. Take a look at this image and tell me if you’re not seeing this type of thing.

Dennis Edell Reply:

Ok, now did you actually enter all those addresses or did it just “grab” them from where ever?

Those are all sites I’ve visited. I have my history set to wipe out any pages I haven’t visited in 3 days, but you can set it for as long or as short as you need; maybe yours is defaulted to one day. So, I entered them once, and then they stay there until it’s time for them to go.

Hmm, perhaps they “fixed” it. When FF3 first came out, the address bar was filled with all sorts of crap right from the get go.

From day one I and hundreds of others were asking how to downgrade to 2 because of it.

Ah, then you must not have been reading my blog at that time, because I wrote three articles about it, and the first two weren’t positive at all.

Dennis Edell Reply:

Ah I guess not. So you know the issue I’m referring to?

Mitch Reply:

Yeah, I had some major issues with it early on, but what was funny is that someone from Mozilla wrote me about it on that particular blog post.

Dennis Edell Reply:

Can you point me to the post?

Mitch Reply:

I’ve got three in a row for you:

one

two

three

Dennis Edell Reply:

Sweet, thanks. I’ll be back when done. ;)

Hey ya con artist! Just wanted me to read 3 more posts didn’tcha. LOL

Well, i read all 3 and no mention of my address bar issue, but I’m definitely saving the one with the support links it in.

Perhaps when the time comes, you can instruct me on how to do the separate folder thing…if it doesn’t work out, I will continue using 2 even unsupported. ;)

Mitch Reply:

No, I didn’t mention the address bar specifically, but I do remember I wasn’t crazy about it. Actually, I like what Opera has done with theirs now, that being having the main URL a different color than its extension; I need to see if there’s a plugin for Firefox that will do that.
