Sandrin, for some reason I don’t think Microsoft is hearing any footsteps walking up behind them. At least in public they don’t, as I heard the Microsoft CEO laughed when asked the question the other day.

I think Google could take over in a reasonable amount of time. Certainly, it would take many years, but they could do it. They took over the Search Engine business — looks like Operating Systems might be next.

I’m not sure they will succeed. Not only do they have to have an operating system, but what about all the software that goes with it? I can’t see any business taking it on, and that is a large part of the market.

Perhaps if their system ran all the Microsoft stuff they would have a slim chance.

Glad to help bring you up to speed, Steve. And I’m with you, I don’t want to see any one company dominating everything either. Microsoft needed some competition, which is a good thing, but I don’t want them losing the lead for market share. Maybe coming down a few pegs with some real competition will make them concentrate more on stability than how pretty something is, which I wouldn’t be depressed about one bit.

Call me paranoid too, but I don’t think it’s a good idea for a single company to control the search engine, browser, and OS markets, whether or not they are a “do no evil” company. I love google (search), but I hope Firefox dominates, and I’d rather see a new company develop the next big OS.

Probably not. For the same reason I haven’t tried out Apple’s OS; I know Windows too well already, whether I always like it or not.

Actually, don’t be too sure Google knows how to play nice with others. It certainly hasn’t been their pattern; usually they either create something similar or just buy what they want. Remember, Google’s been laying people off also, so they don’t have unlimited funds to get away with whatever they want to anymore.

Google won’t do anything that will make them look bad. I mean, we know they’re the best search engine, most people love things like Gmail and Google Docs, and the biggest knock on Chrome is that it’s not firefox. Their OS should make quite an impact.

Oh ok that make sense. I don’t think I ever seen a notebook or desktop with Linux.

I am sure google knows how to get good with companies like dell, hp, etc.
