Another Wordpress Update? This Time, 2.8.4

Posted by Mitch on Aug 14, 2009
Listen with webreader

Man, this is starting to get irritating. Suddenly there’s another Wordpress update, this time 2.8.4. It supposedly closes another security hole that they just discovered, but in reading the explanation, it doesn’t make a lot of sense:

“Yesterday a vulnerability was discovered: a specially crafted URL could be requested that would allow an attacker to bypass a security check to verify a user requested a password reset. As a result, the first account without a key in the database (usually the admin account) would have its password reset and a new password would be emailed to the account owner. This doesn’t allow remote access, but it is very annoying.”

Nope, means nothing to me. However, this is the fourth update in two months, since Wordpress 2.8 was only released on June 10th. That they keep having problems with security holes, and things like internal server errors is irritating enough.

My gripe is that they still haven’t fixed whatever the problem is that keeps many of us from being able to use the automatic upgrade that supposedly comes with it. I say supposedly because ever since they added that to the Wordpress software, instead of us using plugins to do the job, I haven’t been able to an automatic upgrade to a new version on any of my blogs, which I could do easily before, and some plugins won’t update either.

I’ve read where some folks say that we’re supposed to go into our server control panels and make some changes, but if that’s the case then why did it work before? Nope, I’m not buying it, and I wish they’d work on that as an issue. I did call my host to ask them about this problem, since many forums said it would be the hosting companies, and the person on the other end of the line had absolutely no idea what I was talking about, which means they haven’t been flooded with calls asking for assistance on the matter.

Well, I’ll think about upgrading this one. Based on their patterns, they’ll be releasing another update in two or three weeks, and I could wait for that one. I need to think about it; I crave security as much as the next person, and still love Wordpress, but this, you have to admit, is getting a little bit ridiculous.

It’s great that technicians continue to work on making WordPress better, but keeping up with these updates while working on my projects isn’t part of my plan.

I update when I’m ready, and that usually means I skip over many program updates.

It’s not an issue for me, Mitch. But I know that you’re just saying.

Hi Shirley. It’s more of an issue for me because the automatic update doesn’t work, and it’s time consuming having to do it manually. I’m glad they’re working on shutting down these holes, but really, it could be a bit more efficient.

I use WP to manage content sites rather than blogs, and I think that it’s really annoying to have to go into them every other week and make these silly updates. If this one doesn’t really affect anything major, I don’t think it really needed to be released.

Hi Bob. I guess it’s just a security update, which is scary enough, but still, what are the odds that someone will have the knowledge to exploit it all that often, let alone come after small fry’s like us, right? I may wait for the next update; what, two weeks from now?

I was literally talking to Gray about this yesterday – I updated to 2.8.2, then next thing I know its 2.8.3, and now they want 2.8.4!

Tbh I had better get around to that update, haha!

Exactly, Dan. I mean, we’re still happy that it’s free software and good to use, but at a certain point these updates are something else.

Oh I’m with you! I just got all my sites upgraded to 2.8.3 and now this. But I’m afraid to ignore a security update, so I guess this is going to be part of my Saturday morning fun tomorrow.

Mitch, what I have done is to set up an automatic back up of the data base taken once a week as I post regularly. This gets sent to my email address. Whenever there is an update, I have learnt to deactivate plugins, use the automatic upgrade option, reactivate the plug ins and this is fairly simple.

You are blessed that you are not living in India where connectivity and power supply can be erratic at times and during upgrades, Murphy’s law applies.

Hey Rummuser,

That would be easy for me if my blogs would allow the automatic update to work. Just doesn’t work for me, and I’m not sure why, and I’m not happy about it one bit because it worked before 2.7 came along, and hasn’t worked since.

Whatever they make upgrade for, I don’t worry that much about it as lon as it’s for a better version of Wordpress, plus it’s totally free to upgrade…

Don’t get me wrong, Benjamin. I love Wordpress. If the automatic upgrade worked, it would probably be a much easier thing to deal with on such a constant basis. But every two weeks; goodness, it might as well be a plugin. :-)

Wordpress is great & No second thought needed to work in direction its going as long its intended & does improve the experience. I am sure , we cooperate with stuff thats ultimately aimed for our benefits.

Eventually we do, Chris. I’m still holding off until the next update, though.

This reminds me, I need to update wordpress on some of my blogs…I remember back, not so long ago, when updating meant you had to download the lastest version, and go through a 12-15 minute process of copying over files etc. The one click update feature that Wordpress now has is a real time saver!

Mitch Reply:

Willard, it’s a timesaver when it works. Now that I have my plugins working, I can’t wait to see if the next upgrade that comes works better than the previous ones did. And get it done, my man; don’t want you getting your blog hijacked by bad guys.
