An SEO Project I’m Undertaking

Posted by Mitch Mitchell on Apr 7, 2009

As some of you know, I also have a SEO business, SEO Xcellence. From this business, I handle a few clients on a monthly basis, working on getting them up higher on the search engines for certain terms.

Well, I’ve decided that it’s time to see how good or bad I am with some of this stuff. So, putting it out here for the masses, I’m about to undertake a project to see if I can increase my ranking on the major search engine for some search terms for three websites. Two are mine, the aforementioned above, and this blog. The other is one of my clients, Srim Enterprises, whom I introduced with my post on Nutritional Questions Answered.

Here’s the deal. I’m not shooting for the stars, although those would be nice. What I want to see is if I can affect, in some fashion, where each of these sites will be ranked in a month for certain terms. Here are those terms, as well as where we sit right now:

Srim Enterprises

The term: “Food Doctor”

Present rankings: Google – 106
Yahoo – 45
MSN – 60

SEO Xcellence

The term: “Internet Marketing Consultant”

Present Rankings: MSN – 54
Yahoo – 14

I’m Just Sharing

The term: “Affiliate Internet Marketing”

Present rankings: MSN – 825

So, those are the terms I’m going to shoot for. As you notice, on my two I have no Google ranking whatsoever; that’s a shame. And, for clarification, for my main business, “internet marketing consultant” isn’t what we usually talk about around here as far as trying to make money on the internet. It’s about internet presence for small businesses and how to use their websites for their business, which relates to my ebook Using Your Website As A Marketing Tool, a copy of which Mirjam just won as a prize on one of Dennis’ contests.

How am I going to do it? I’m not telling; yeah, that’s a shame, but I’m not telling up front. However, I expect to write about this in about a month, the follow up, and if what I hope happens does, and I increase each site for the terms we’re shooting for, I’ll tell it then. And, now that I’ve written this here, I can’t take it back. Well, I could, but I won’t; wish me luck. Maybe if I show improvement and tell you how I did it, y’all will gift me with some love in that Top Spots area there, eh? :-D

I wish you luck on this, your next venture and I will wait with baited breath to see the results. I reckon this is something that I should be doing but I really don’t have the time.

Thanks Sire. I hope it all works, the stuff I’m doing, but if not, I’ll still talk all about it.

Some huge competition in the first two keywords.

Are you going to try and rank for them with or without quotes?

I used SEO elite to check you current rankings so I could track them and found;

seoxcellence.com is not ranking for its keyword in any of the big 3.

Srim.com contact page ranks 175 in google and past page 100 on msn and a houdini on yahoo.

and imjustsharing.com also did not make an appearance.

(this was with google set on ‘all countries’ and yahoo as ‘uk’)

This may be due to your link building since yesterday I dont know :p

Though I wish you luck and would advocate Traffic Android to help automate some of the more menial tasks.

Mitch Reply:

We use different programs to check rankings, Donace. I’m using Google Rankings, which most people don’t have access to anymore because, I believe, they stopped giving out API keys for it. The idea is to rank for these things without quotation marks. I have also noticed that, depending on where you are, the rankings seem to move around. For instance, someone wrote me the other day about the name of my business blog and said they showed it in the 3rd position for the name. I looked it up and found I was in the first position for the name. He was in the Midwest, I’m in New York, so it’s possible that Google changes things up based on where you are.

Donace | The Nexus Reply:

Hmm what locale are you using? the benefit of SEO elite is I can change the locales for the engines; though normally they are set on global (ie google.com)

Mitch Reply:

As I said, I’m in New York. lol

Donace | The Nexus Reply:

It’s marked as ‘all countries and territories’

I don’t know what to say, Donace. On each of our parts, it is what it is.

i thought seo elite was a terrible tool to use considering many have informed me that its an effective tool which might be why he wasn’t getting ranked for anyone of the keywords he’s trying to rank for

Yeah, I thought you might get it once you saw what I’m trying to do. As for the book, hey, it’ll always be there; enjoy your time with your mother.

good luck, i hope you have a lot of success with this endeavor, seo is a pretty hotly contested area right now and if you can do well there then you’re set.

Mitch Reply:

Thanks Richard. Actually, it’s easy to improve a site that no one has done nothing with, but since I do things with my sites, it’s a bit more of a challenge. Still, we’ll see what ultimately happens, either way.

almir Reply:

certainly agree seo has been a lot of fun for people trying to make a lasting impression on the internet

hi Mitch,
I will be very interested to see what works, and what doesn’t work, for you! And I wish you good luck!
One question, is there a reason you picked “food doctor”? Do very many people search for that?

Mitch Reply:

Not specifically on its own, Steve, but in conjunction with nutrition, absolutely. He’s not a nutritionist, but those are some of the people he’s competing against, and if I can get him targeted properly, he’ll move up in some fashion. I’m working with him to create a second nutritional answers page, if you remember when I promoted it here.

April 8th, 2009 | 10:32 AM

hey Mitch,
Yes I remember that post and his site.
In your post, you linked to his inner page with the anchor “nutritional questions”. It ranks #10 on google for that. I’m not sure if its the page title or the link or both, but somethings working. :) ~ Steve

Mitch Reply:

Yeah, I saw that, Steve, which is why I knew I didn’t have to work on optimizing that particular phrase. So, all is underway, and we’ll see if some things start to change over the next couple of weeks.

April 8th, 2009 | 12:18 PM

Good luck Mitch. As Donace said ‘Internet Marketing Consultant’ should be a tougher one. But have you set targets (as in SERPs position or page numbre) for the next one month?

Ajith Edassery´s last blog post..Dealing with those ‘Page Not Found!’ errors on your blog

Mitch Reply:

Hi Ajith. No, no specific targets, other than getting ranked in the first place, which, as you see, seems to be difficult in its own sense. The point isn’t to try to get to number one; I think that’s impossible for one month. But to improve, no matter what the improvement is, doesn’t hurt the experiment, or make it invalid. That is, if it can be done.

April 9th, 2009 | 11:58 AM

Cant wait to see the results, the sites are all mature, so I think a 3 month plan should be good, but will be interesting to see how things will progress month by month. A good solid strategy and a Google page 1 is attainable for all the keywords.

Mitch Reply:

Hi Khaled; yes, it will be interesting to see how it goes, though I’m only specifically going to track it for a month, just to see what happens. Of course, right now I seem to have lost access to my client’s site, so that’s a little setback I hadn’t counted in, but I’ll get it eventually. And you and Ajith can hope for me to reach page one; I just want to get into the game. :-)

Great topic, great posts. Will be interested to see how this pans out. We came across Google Rankings some time back but don’t use it. If it’s one you find useful, I’d be interested to hear any benefits (despite noting you say they’re no longer distributing keys). Cheers,
