Amp and “Push It”

Posted by Mitch Mitchell on Mar 6, 2008

During the Super Bowl, Amp Energy Drink had this commercial that featured the song “Push It” by Salt ‘n Pepa. For some reason, that was the only time I’ve seen the commercial, which made me wonder if the company spent so much money on the Super Bowl that they couldn’t afford to show it again, or whether the commercial falls flat for some reason, or whether most people wondered what the heck Amp was (I didn’t know myself).

I’m not sure, but loving that YouTube has it, I wanted to share it here, then hear your comments on it:

I needed to be reminded of this ad, actually, and considering I watch very little TV, I usually remember Super Bowl ads.

My guess is that there’s a real disconnect between who Amp thinks its target audience is and who this ad was aimed at.

There’s a 30-something-year-old guy dancing to a tune that came out when 30-something-year-olds were in middle school and high school. Which would be great if the biggest consumers of energy drinks like Amp were 30-somethings, rather than high school and college students.

Mitch:

That’s an interesting take on it. I hadn’t seen the guy as being 30-something, but maybe that’s because I’m older. But the point about the overall commercial aiming at the wrong audience,… I think that just might be right on.
